Alan Hill was born and raised in Yorkshire, where he developed his love for cricket, before moving to Sussex. An author and journalist, Alan Hill has written numerous books, the first of which was on his adopted county, The Family Fortune: A Saga of Sussex Cricket. He is a two-time winner of the prestigious Cricket Society's Jubilee Literary Award for biographies Hedley Verity, Portrait of a Cricketer (1986) and Herbert Sutcliffe: Cricket Maestro (1991). He has written biographies on another Surrey legend, Peter May, as well as on Bill Edrich, Johnny Wardle, and Les Ames.
