Labour in Transition: New Patterns of Work in Eastern Europe and China by Chris R. Smith
State Socialist regimes have undergone massive transformations in recent years. This book brings together accounts of changes in the labour process and the broader political economy, ranging from societies that are still state socialist such as China, to those in Eastern Europe and to what was the Soviet Union, that have moved rapidly in a post-communist direction. This book draws from some of the leading Western writers on state socialism, including Michael Burawoy and David Stark. It combines empirical research on recent reform processes with broader attempts to produce a comparative analysis of capitalism, socialism and the transition to new social formations. The contributions are written in an accessible way, drawing from the direct experience of the authors. Contributions from Michael Burawoy, Donald Filtzer, Jude Howell, David Mandel, Otfried Mickler, Chris Smith, David Stark and Paul Thompson are included.
