Neuropsychological Treatment of Dyslexia Summary

Neuropsychological Treatment of Dyslexia by Dirk J. Bakker (Professor of Psychology, Free University of Amsterdam)

This volume provides a complete description of the relationship between learning to read and hemispheric functioning, which has been found to change the course of development. Initial reading skills are controlled primarily by the right cerebral hemisphere, but as readers become more advanced, the left hemisphere becomes dominant. Some children fail to make this shift and are at risk of developing one type of dyslexia, while children who prematurely rely on left-hemispheric reading strategies may develop another type. These two types of dyslexia have been found to respond to different types of stimulation. The book includes comprehensive information on these treatments, with extensive discussion of their strengths, weaknesses, and limitations, along with an analysis of a number of experimental, field, and individual case studies.

Neuropsychological Treatment of Dyslexia Reviews

"This is the type of book that should be written more often. The complex subject-matter of dyslexia and the nervous system, including such complicated issues as laterality, are explicated in such a way that is intelligible for all. This is no small feat." --Medisch Contact "No longer should there be any question that severe developmental reading disorders (dyslexia) are of neurological origin. Based on a long tradition of research, this book summarizes the literature on how dyslexics' brains may differ in patterns of cerebral lateralization and how these differences may manifest behaviorally. This book is unique for several reasons. First, this volume is a translated version of the original book published in Dutch. The translation is extremely well done and the text is rich with illustrations and comprehensible discussions of the author's work . . . Second, this book is unique because it is the first one available that suggests a treatment program based on recent research and validated through the author's own work . . . This book should assist greatly in stimulating further research aimed at assessing the validity of this treatment approach." --Contemporary Psychology
