Integrated Mental Health Care Summary

Integrated Mental Health Care: A Comprehensive, Community-Based Approach by Ian R. H. Falloon (University of Auckland)

This challenging book is based on the experience of the pioneering Buckingham project, a comprehensive mental health service focusing on primary care, and describes a new approach to the provision of mental health service to a community. Using the vulnerability-stress model of mental illness, the authors place their findings and recommendations in the wider context of mental health care provision, and draw widely on international research in this field. They insist on a rigorous approach to the provision and evaluation of care, and use telling case studies to reveal the benefits as well as some of the difficulties that may be experienced. The practical and cost effective approach described will be of the greatest interest to health care professionals in whatever treatment setting they may be working.

Integrated Mental Health Care Reviews

'An important and, in many ways, an original book. The model of care is compelling; the goals and strategies enunciate in a kind of pristine form the aspirations of many. There are plenty of ideas which stimulate and challenge ... I gained much from reading this book, and recommend it.' Journal of Psychological Medicine
"...a valuable introduction to comprehensive community care for primary physicians and community nurses...health care administrators...or faculty who teach in the mental health disciplines." Hospital and Community Psychiatry Studies in Social and Community Psychiatry
"...written in a coherent way by people who obviously have 'hands on' experience of the development and practice of community psychiatry...junior doctors and community based staff will find the descriptions of clinical interventions such as working with the families of mentally ill people and the case examples useful guidelines to good practice. Professionals,,,will also find the sections on models of service, assessment schedules for individual clients and service evaluation procedures to be sensible introductions to these topics...likely to have appeal to most mental health professionals." Jan Scott, The Psychiatric Bulletin
"...a good focused summary of the available research....offers insightful descriptions of the enhancements this Project has added to typical community-based mental health services." Ray Carlson, Social Work in Health Care
